Today, I’ll be going over 10 things to keep a close eye on when starting a blog for the first time. Let’s get started and go over the 10 things you need to keep a close eye on when getting started. If you have any feedback, please leave it in the comment box below.

1) Research

Many people start their blog without taking time to do the right amount of research. I’ll be honest with you, before getting started you need to know what you’re getting involved with because this will help you avoid the mistakes that others make. For example, what you want to do is research the things which stand in your way, and research some topics that are high in demand. Remember, if you’ve read my other content, I’ve placed a lot of emphasis on research for content because it will help guide your content writing. Knowing what keywords to place in your content will also let you write content which has been optimized for search engines.

Check out Google Search, Trends and competitor websites for information on topics and what people are looking for because you can then focus your writing on what people need.

2) Competition

Startup Blog can be great for business because it provides a lot of information on what you should be doing and what not. But, it can also be bad because it will slow down your overall growth. But, many bloggers get into a niche where there is a lot of competition and this will slow down your overall growth. Then, it takes longer to create your brand and build a presence which can be very demotivating. For this reason, you need to know what to expect and who your competition is before getting started. By knowing this, you’ll be able to plan how fast your blog will grow and save up enough money to ensure that you’ll sustain yourself even if you fail to create massive engagement early.

3) Budget

For a Startup Blog Many bloggers fail to put aside money for the domain, hosting and upkeep. After a while, your money will start to run out so you need to plan for worse case scenario. Many people get involved with blogging thinking they’ll be able to make money after a few months, but many times this isn’t the case so are left disappointed. For this reason, I encourage all of you to save enough money to sustain yourself for at least a few months just in case things don’t end up being the way you had planned.

4) Domain Name

It’s tough finding the right domain name so it’s important you start to research this even before starting your Startup Blog. Gather ideas from everywhere and even ask others about what they think. I used to think that finding a domain name was easy but it’s really hard especially when it will be representing your brand and website going forward. You want to find one which is easy to remember and one which people can look at and know what your blog is all about. I use GoDaddy for all my blogging needs because I can also purchase hosting at the same time to keep everything on one platform.

5) Hosting

Many bloggers do not consider the importance of hosting when starting. Also, need to keep in mind that many hosting providers will offer plans, but not all of them will be similar. And you want to keep an eye on the hosting plan you choose so RAM, space, and other’s features are not limited. You can also choose from shared, VPS and dedicated so should be able to easily upgrade when needed. Others offer WordPress which is amazing and can be installed with the click of a mouse button for Startup Blog. This is the number one blogging platform and will allow you to make websites within a few minutes which is always a plus.

6) Content Writing

Have your list of content ideas ready because it can be hard to come up with ideas when you need them. Space out your content writing so you have them available for writing. I like to gather content ideas once a month creating a list of 20-25 for Startup Blog. Which I’ll be writing and publishing throughout the month. But, make sure when coming up with ideas, you pay close attention to the topics you choose and if they are in demand.

Your content is the most important thing which will not only build loyalty but will help you rank in the search engines.

7) Marketing Channels

As a blogger, you need to know what marketing channels are available to you. This is more important nowadays when you have advertising programs popping up everywhere. Take some time to see what’s out there and what you can afford with spending too much money. From my experience, advertising your Startup Blog on websites can help increase engagement which is always good for your bottom line. For example, skim and check out Google AdWords, social media, and banners advertisements.

8) Guest Posting

There’s going to be a time where you get busy to maintain your website and building blocks of your site. For this reason, you should see what’s out there to make things easier for yourself. For example, did you know you can hire someone to write content on your behalf? This will free up a lot of time allowing you to focus on building your brand. And other important aspects of your website.

9) Consistency

Another huge mistake made by beginner bloggers is they forget consistency. Once your blog is up and running, you’ll have readers who expect to see content published on your blog regularly. If you don’t publish this content, you can end up losing readers which will destroy your bottom line. You need to remain consistent in your content writing, publishing, and social media activity. As readers see more of your content, they’ll continue to share it and this can build not only your readership but your engagement.

Over the years, I’ve learned that through consistency, you can improve your ROI by 75% which is a staggering amount.

10) Networking

In the beginning, whenever you get a chance to network with another blogger, I recommend taking that opportunity. You’re going to find others within your niche you might reach out for your help and are starting out too. Networking is keyword because you never know where that blogger will be in a few years. And they might be able to build momentum to your blog. Always stay humble and whenever you have an opportunity to network with a blogger in your niche. It’s important you take advantage of it. Here are a few places where you’ll be able to find influential bloggers within your niche –

  • Niche-based communities
  • Other blogs by doing a search in Google
  • Through others which you have networked with
  • Conferences and events
